A Commercial Branding Project for Polytag

Every commercial photography project tells a different story. Some are about showcasing people, others about products, and some are about making complex ideas easier to understand through carefully crafted imagery.

My recent collaboration with Polytag was one of those projects that perfectly demonstrated the power of authentic commercial photography.

Alice Rackley, Founder and CEO of Polytag, first contacted me following a recommendation. After exchanging a few emails, we arranged to meet and discuss the company's goals, the visual direction they were looking for, and how my photography could support their marketing strategy.

From our very first conversation, it was clear that this wasn't simply a request for corporate photographs. The aim was to create a professional image library that would communicate Polytag's innovative technology in a way that felt genuine, approachable and easy to understand.

Understanding the Brand

Polytag is a UK technology company helping brands better understand what happens to their packaging after it has been used by consumers.

Using advanced barcode technology and invisible UV markers, Polytag enables brands, retailers and recycling facilities to identify individual products, collect valuable recycling data and improve packaging sustainability. Their technology supports businesses in building a more transparent circular economy, helping them make informed decisions about future packaging design and environmental impact.

Explaining technology like this through words alone can be challenging.

That's where photography becomes such an important communication tool.

Planning the Visual Story

Every successful commercial photoshoot begins long before the camera is picked up. Together, Alice and I reviewed a detailed shot list and discussed exactly how each photograph would be used across the company's website, presentations and social media channels.

Rather than photographing day-to-day office life, we carefully planned a series of realistic business scenarios that would visually explain how Polytag's technology works in practice.

Every scene had a purpose.

Every image needed to support the company's message.

Creating Authentic Business Scenarios

The photographs were created across two different locations — within modern office spaces and in real retail environments.

Instead of documenting actual employees at work, we created authentic-looking situations using people who represented professionals interacting naturally with the technology. This approach allowed us to focus entirely on visual storytelling while creating images that many different businesses could relate to.

We photographed conversations around meeting tables, collaborative working sessions, barcode scanning, product discussions and interactions with Polytag's software displayed on computer screens.

Each setup was photographed from multiple angles and with different compositions, giving the marketing team a versatile collection of images suitable for a wide variety of marketing materials.

One of the technical priorities throughout the shoot was ensuring that both the people and the information displayed on computer monitors and smartphone screens remained perfectly sharp and easy to read. This was achieved by photographing on a tripod, allowing every frame to align precisely throughout the session.

During post-production, I carefully blended multiple exposures to create natural-looking images where every important element—from facial expressions to the content displayed on screens—remained crisp and clear. It's one of those details that often goes unnoticed, yet it plays a significant role in producing commercial photography that is both visually engaging and genuinely informative.

Why Authentic Photography Was Essential

One aspect of the project stood out from the very beginning.

Authenticity mattered.

In today's world, where AI-generated imagery is becoming increasingly common, Alice wanted Polytag's visual communication to be built on real photography.

Real products.

Real environments.

Real interactions.

This decision was particularly important because some of Polytag's technology involves invisible UV security markers that only become visible under ultraviolet light. Genuine photography helps reinforce trust and credibility, ensuring that the images accurately represent the technology and the way it works.

For companies built on innovation and transparency, authenticity is not simply a creative choice—it becomes part of the brand itself.

Technical Precision Behind the Scenes

Creating bright, consistent imagery across a spacious office environment presented another interesting challenge.

Large commercial interiors often contain areas with very different lighting conditions, especially those further away from windows.

To achieve the clean, modern look the client wanted, I brought professional studio lighting to complement the available natural light. This allowed every image to maintain a consistent quality, colour balance and professional finish throughout the day.

Good commercial photography often looks effortless—but achieving that result depends on careful preparation and the right equipment.

More Than Beautiful Images

The final gallery delivered exactly what we had hoped to achieve.

A collection of authentic, high-quality photographs that communicate Polytag's technology clearly while reflecting the company's values, professionalism and innovative approach.

Projects like this remind me that commercial photography is about far more than creating attractive pictures.

It's about understanding a business.

Understanding its audience.

And creating imagery that helps people instantly connect with the story behind the brand.
